British Survivor Recounts Tale of Surviving Deadly Spanish Wildfire

A British man has shared his harrowing experience of surviving a devastating wildfire in Spain that resulted in the death of his wife and 12 friends and neighbours. The wildfire, which swept through the village of Bédar in Almeria province, claimed 13 lives last Thursday.

Tragic Loss in Bédar

Malcolm Timbrell, aged 70, is the sole survivor among his close-knit group. Speaking from the ruins of his home, he conveyed the shock and disbelief of being the only one left alive. "You'd never imagine it could happen," he remarked. Timbrell's wife, Annette Kilgore, 69, who was known for her happy and outgoing personality, was among those who perished.

The couple had moved to Bédar after appearing on the Channel 4 show 'A Place in the Sun'. They had enjoyed a fulfilling life together, filled with travel and friendship, until the tragic events unfolded.

Facing the Fire

As the fast-moving wildfire approached their home, Malcolm and Annette, along with their neighbours, decided to evacuate by car. However, Malcolm returned to the house to rescue their cats, Charlie and Lilly. This decision inadvertently saved his life, as he later realized.

Attempting to rejoin the group, Malcolm saw his wife and friends abandon their cars, believing it safer to escape on foot. Tragically, the advancing fire, moving at over 20 kilometres per hour, overtook them.

Survival Against the Odds

Finding himself alone in the chaos, Malcolm sought refuge in the remaining cars, as four of the six vehicles ignited. Miraculously, the last two cars, though damaged, did not catch fire, allowing him and one of the cats to survive.

After the flames passed, rescue teams found Malcolm and later discovered the bodies of eight victims on a path leading from his house. It's believed that four of the deceased were found in a right-hand drive vehicle.

Investigations and Reactions

Authorities have yet to identify all the victims, but it's confirmed that among them are three Britons, a French, a Belgian, and a Spanish national. Among the deceased was a 93-year-old woman, who succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Residents, including many British expatriates, have criticized the absence of a mobile alert system. However, Malcolm refrained from blaming anyone, acknowledging the challenging conditions that hampered firefighting efforts, including high winds and smoke that grounded helicopters.

Despite his devastating loss, Malcolm expressed gratitude for the support he has received from friends of various nationalities and praised the local police for keeping him informed.

Coping with Loss

The couple had moved to Spain hoping for a peaceful retirement after each had lost their previous partners to illness. They shared a mutual love for sailing and making new friends, with aspirations of enjoying their later years in the Andalusian countryside.

Malcolm now faces the grim task of awaiting DNA confirmation of the victims' identities. As he contemplates the enormity of his loss, he fears how he will cope with the aftermath.
