Tragic Bar Fire in Bangkok Claims Lives and Leaves Many Injured

Devastating Fire Sweeps Through Bangkok Bar

A catastrophic blaze engulfed a bar in Bangkok's Chatuchak district late Sunday, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 28 lives and leaving 25 others critically injured. The fire erupted near the stage of the bar, known as Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, and rapidly consumed the establishment, cutting off power and filling the room with smoke. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic, with patrons desperately fleeing through the flames.

Emergency Response and Survivor Accounts

Firefighters arrived shortly after midnight and managed to extinguish the blaze. However, most victims were found in the bathroom, where they had apparently sought refuge. National police chief Kitrat Panphet noted, "Most of the people who died were found in the toilets. When the fire broke out, they panicked. There were no lights."

One survivor, Kaew-udon Poungppany from Laos, recounted his harrowing experience as he tried to reach his brother who did not survive the incident. "I grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed it at the door... but I couldn't go any further. I heard people screaming," he shared with journalists.

Investigation into the Cause

Initial investigations by Bangkok's disaster mitigation department suggest that an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner might have sparked the fire, though no official cause has been confirmed. Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation into the incident. Despite previous commitments to enhance fire and electrical safety standards, such incidents remain a concern in Thailand due to poor enforcement.

Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt indicated that flammable interior decorations might have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Additionally, reports suggest there may have been obstructions near the emergency exit, which will be scrutinized in the ongoing investigation.

Witnesses and Aftermath

Usa Tadsree, a 41-year-old survivor, narrowly escaped the disaster after stepping outside for a cigarette. "There was a boom – a very fast boom... There was no way to get out at all," she told Reuters. She described seeing rescuers retrieve the body of a friend she had been with moments before the fire.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene and relayed accounts from a musician performing at the time. The musician reported a sudden "blasting" and attempts to escape from the smoke and flames.

According to authorities, 71 people were injured during the fire, with 25 in critical condition. The bar owner is among those receiving intensive care. The Chatuchak district office has announced the temporary closure of the building for 30 days.

Historical Context and Compensation

Tragically, this is not the first time Thailand has faced such incidents. In 2022, a similar fire in a bar south of Bangkok claimed 22 lives. A 2009 nightclub fire in Bangkok resulted in 66 deaths. In 2024, a fire caused by an electrical short circuit at the Chatuchak market killed 1,000 animals.

In response to the recent tragedy, authorities have promised compensation to the victims' families. Those who lost loved ones will receive 29,300 Thai baht, while injured individuals will receive 4,000 baht for medical treatment.
