Childcare Worker in Sydney Faces Serious Allegations
The identity of a Sydney daycare worker facing 329 charges related to child abuse has been publicly disclosed. Hamish Tait, accused of abusing 136 children across five daycare centres over a span of 16 years, was named after the lifting of a court order. This order had been in place while police identified victims and reached out to their families.
Details of the Charges
Initially arrested in July of the previous year, Tait has remained in custody. The charges against him include 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming a private act without consent. Law enforcement has reported contacting 121 families affected by these alleged crimes, though 22 victims are yet to be identified.
"Any form of child sexual abuse is confronting and horrific, even more so when the alleged perpetrator is an individual trusted with the care of our youth," stated Acting Commander Luke Needham from the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
Scope of Allegations
Tait's employment history includes working or attending 62 early childhood education facilities in Sydney from 2009 to 2025, mostly in the city's north-west. The alleged offences took place at five facilities, including four daycare centres and Tait's private business. Police have launched a website to identify the centres where Tait was employed and to provide support for affected families.
The charges encompass 22 counts of aggravated use of a child under 14 years for producing child abuse material and 18 counts of intentionally sexually touching a child under 10 years. Tait was connected to illegal online activities in June last year, leading to the discovery of child abuse material on electronic devices seized during a property raid in Glossodia, near Sydney.
Context of Recent Cases
These allegations are part of a wider context of child abuse cases in Australian daycare centres. Notably, Ashley Paul Griffith confessed to 307 offences at various childcare centres in Queensland and overseas over 20 years. Additionally, police last year recommended that over 1,200 children in Victoria undergo testing for sexually transmitted diseases after Joshua Dale Brown was charged with numerous child abuse offences at four daycare centres.
